sock aid

Duro Med Deluxe flexible Stocking White

Duro Med Deluxe flexible Stocking White

I had high dose radiation to my left hip in January of this year, and one of the the side effects can be muscle fibrosis (scarring) and edema (swelling) in the area treated. I am currently undergoing physical therapy to deal with this, and one of the most frustrating and difficult situations this has put me in has been the inability to bend over on my left side. Putting on a sock became increasingly more and more difficult and painful and, quite frankly, is now impossible. There were two days I simply did not go into work, not because of symptoms, but because as a person who lives alone, I could not get my left sock on. (Wearing footwear without socks is not permitted in my workplace.) It was enough to bring tears of frustration each morning.

I reviewed this device, and decided to give it a shot, and it has literally changed my life. I can know put on any sock of my choosing on my affected side in a matter of minutes. The construction and material is very solid, and the straps are long enough. I am 6'3" and can't really reach below my knee right now, and I have no issue whatsoever pulling my sock up. I also have fairly wide feet, and the hard plastic, yet flexible, shell fits my foot with total ease.

I highly recommend this device to anyone who may need the additional assistance of getting their socks on. I would have gladly paid many times its selling price for the degree of independence this product provides.

Cycle Saver Install Bicycles Mountain

Cycle Saver Install Bicycles Mountain

The setup for this router was extremely simple. Plug the device into a power outlet and Modem, boot up your computer, toss in the included disk, follow a few instructions, and you're set.

During the setup, a Router Monitoring program is installed. This gives you quick and easy access to options should you wish to access more advanced setings. It is not necessary if you stick to the default.

I had previously attempted to setup a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH, which was highly recommended to me by friends who have used it successfully. After nearly pulling out all my hair, I ended up returning the device. For some reason the wireless signal would not detect properly. I returned it as recommended by Buffalo support and tried another. Same issue, so I sent the second back as well.

From there I went with a D-Link DIR-655. It took some tweaking and manual channel switching before it would work, but at least it worked.

After hooking up the Belkin N150, I was amazed to see that, after following the setup instructions, it was up and running! I successfully connected my MyTouch 4G phone, iPad 2, and Gateway laptop. I didn't have to tweak anything. Oddly enough it also had a stronger signal than my D-Link DIR-655 (which has three antennas). All the devices gave me 4bars at the farthest location in my house, where the D-Link DIR-655 often moves down to three or lower.

Out of curiosity, I checked the internet speed between the Belkin N150 and D-Link DIR-655. The D-Link DIR-655 gave me a download speed of 7414kbps with a 1417kbps upload speed. The Belkin N150 gave me a 8785kbps download speed with a 1140kbps upload speed (I used the integra Telecom speed test and have Comcast as my internet provider). This tells me that their internet speed is pretty much the same, as the speed tests in general tend to fluctuate a bit.

One negative about the Belkin N150 is that the LAN ports on the back are only 10/100 whereas the D-Link DIR-655 is 10/100/1000. That said, for the price, I was extremely impressed with the Belkin N150 and will be recommending it to friends and family who are looking for a good buy.

Great light

Cygolite 350 Lumen USB Rechargeable Headlight

Cygolite 350 Lumen USB Rechargeable Headlight

I purchased this light based on the reviews here. Out of all the other comparable lights, this one seemed to be the best value. The light itself is very well constructed and feels solid in your hands. The light is very bright just as advertised and 350 lumen equates to bright enough to light up the path in front of you on a dark road. If you plan on cycling faster than 20-25 mph, you should consider a much brighter light.

The only problems I found with the light itself was that the charging status indicator wasn't visible or working but I know that the charger and usb cable was functional after testing it with another usb rechargeable bike flashlight. I contacted Cygolite customer service via email about this and they responded within a day. I was told "The charging indicator is located underneath the blue power button on the top power button. Please note that it might be a little hard to see because of the blue button." This turned out to be the case. In a lighted room or in bright light, I couldn't see the status indicator. However when I looked closely or when I turned off the room light, I was able to see the charging light indicator.

Now on the only other problem I initially experienced. My handlebar likes most MTB bars get thicker in the middle where it connects to the stem. The part either side of the stem is too large for the included shims of the mount. When I removed the shims and only installed the rubber grip cushion, my bars where slightly too small at the maximum tightness of the mount. So I found a thin piece of left over rubber shims from my grab bag of reflectors and other mountable bike accessories and voila. I was able to install the mount and it held securely in place. So what I initially thought was a problem with the mount screw being stripped wasn't and all turned out very well. This is a great product and I would recommend this to my cycling friends.

Lives up to the reference to Thoreau

Walden Wheels Open Road Freedom

Walden Wheels Open Road Freedom

I hesitated to get this book, as a feared that I would not like the author, and thus not relate to the story. I was thinking he was just another of those people who want attention for being rebellious or "weird". Instead, I found a young man who does rebel against blindly following society's "norms", but does so in large part because of what he believes, not just to rebel for the sake of rebelling I found much of what he wrote to be well thought out. He does indeed remind me of Thoreau, and is a worthy successor.

The book in broken into 4 parts: Debtor, or My Attempt to Pay Off $32,000 in Student Debt with a Useless Liberal Arts Degree; Tramp, or My Attempt to Live a Free Life in Spite of Debt; Grad Student, or My Attempt to Afford Grad School by Moving into a Creepy Red Van, and Vandweller, or How I Learned to Live Simply.

The following are brief quotes from the book that give insight into the outlook of Mr. Ilgunas, and showcase what you can expect from the book: "Yet after each rest, I was able to get up and take a few more steps, and a few more after that. At some point, I'd wandered into that strange territory between my perceived limits and my actual limits -- that stretch of land called the "unknown" a territory as wild and unfamiliar at the Alaskan country before me." (pp. 25); "Perhaps there's no better act of simplification than climbing a mountain. For an afternoon, a day, or a week, it's a way of reducing a complicated life into a simple goal." (pp. 29); "I became obsessed with destroying what I thought was most constraining me. The debt wasn't a mere dollar amount; it was a villain that needed to be vanquished, a dragon that needed to be slain, a windmill that needed to be toppled." (pp. 47); I was bearing witness to an ancient ritual (the northern lights) that I felt I'd seen in a previous lifetime. I was being reacquainted with the images processed by a million eyes before me, reveling in the privileges of the great human experience. Money, prestige, possessions, a home with two and a half bathrooms -- these aren't the guiding lights of our universe that show us our path." (pp. 73); "When we tell ourselves that we are controlled, we can shift the responsibility of freeing ourselves onto that which controls us. When we do that, we don't have to bear the responsibility of our unhappiness or shoulder the burden of self-ownership. We don't have to do anything. And nothing will ever change." (pp. 74); "(Thoreau) described how his fellow citizens ("serfs of the soil") would toil away at desks or on huge farms, hating every minute of it, just so they could live in large homes and wear fashionable clothes in order to impress their neighbors, who were also unhappily employed." (pp. 78); "By having had to do without, I discovered that I was, in many ways, better off." (pp.78); ""while I only made $22,000 in a year, I saved 82 percent of it and could have saved nearly 100 percent if I hadn't spent it on my trip to Ecuador and other tiny luxury costs." (pp.81); "Alaska taught me that anything was possible; that there are other ways to live, to work, to shelter oneself; that the cold wasn't so cold; and that -- even in an age of inky oceans and suburban sprawl -- there was still wildness." (pp.88); "Frankly, I didn't know what the hell I was doing. This was all just so weird. Yet I knew the experience would be memorable. And I hoped that the strain of the voyage might somehow fast-forward my development." (pp.109); "But when we go on a journey -- especially a journey that follows no one else's footsteps -- it has the capacity to help a person become something unique, an individual. While Western society never had anything quite like the vision quest, we do have a heritage of journeying laced into our cultural DNA." (pp. 116): "The voyage was teaching me how unexceptional I was and how exceptional the human mind and body is." (pp. 117); "I learned that when work is meaningful and when the worker produces some useful service or produces some useful product, work is no longer "work" but an enriching component of one's day." (pp. 145); "I was so terrified of guilt I never did anything that I thought someone else would disapprove of. For my whole life, I'd been feeling guilt for doing -- or wanting to do -- what my instincts begged that I do." (pp. 148).

In short, life is about experiences and personal growth, not stuff.

IU graduate who loves this movie

Breaking Away

Breaking Away

A sleeper that made the grade and graduated into the realms of Classic Flicks, Breaking Away is one of those wonderfully uplifting and subtly patriotic movies that champions small-town America. Steve Tesich won the screenplay Oscar for this semi-biographical story about four 19yo kids who can't quite decide what to do with themselves after high school. They live in Bloomington, Indiana, where the guys from the university look down on the townies and make derogatory comments about their rock quarrying forebears. One of them drifts, then runs, into the world of Italian bicycling, much to his used-car-salesman father's dismay and embarrassment.
You'll feel yourself pulled into rising excitement as the marvelous finale hoves into view, and, though sorry to see the film end, you'll hit the rewind button with a big smile on your face.
